"Housed in an intriguing sail-shaped building on the harbour, just west of the city centre, the maritime museum is a fascinating exploration of WA's relationship with the ocean. Well-presented displays range from yacht racing to Aboriginal fish traps and the sandalwood trade. If you're not claustrophobic, take an hour-long tour of the submarine HMAS Ovens; the vessel was part of the Australian Navy's fleet from 1969 to 1997. Tours leave every half-hour from 10am to 3.30pm. Booking ahead is recommended."

"Founded in 1895, this excellent gallery houses the state's pre-eminent art collection. It contains important post-WWII works by Australian luminaries such as Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker, Grace Cossington Smith, Russell Drysdale, Arthur Streeton and Sidney Nolan. The Indigenous-art galleries are also very well regarded: work ranges from canvases to bark paintings and sculpture, and artists include Rover Thomas, Angilya Mitchell, Christopher Pease and Phyllis Thomas. "Kalamunda History Village is the largest folk museum in Western Australia, depicting the early years of life in the Perth Hills and the industries that developed in the area. Stand in the old Upper Darling Range Railway Station built in the 1890s and imagine the trains transporting timber on the Zig Zag line from Canning Mills to the main line at Midland Junction. Then turn back the clock as you enter the School House, queue in the Post Office, grade fruit in the Orchard Shed and even visit the Dunny!"
